Zakopane:

During free weekends and off hours at either the Siedlce or the Zakopane site, volunteers can immerse themselves in the historic charms of this fascinating country. Two hours from Zakopane is the celebrated city of Krakow, the capital of Poland from 1320 to 1609, and still a center of learning and culture as well as major industries. A popular attraction there is the Jagiellonian University (Krakow Academy), founded in 1364, which counts Nicolaus Copernicus and Pope John Paul II among its alumni.

Siedlce:
Global Volunteers' host community, Siedlce, offers many cultural events and competitions throughout the year. The Centre of Culture and Art and the Municipal Cultural Centre present numerous dance and music recitals open to the public. Some that are nationally known are "Recital" Polish Festival of Singing Poetry, International Jazz Standards Festival, International Festival of Music, Dance and Folklore, and Polish Tournament of Poetry reading "Kamie Wiary".

The Podlasie Academy schedules several youth sports events throughout the school season as well. The "Podlasie" and "Chodowiacy" dance groups maintain regional and national folk traditions. Choirs working with the Music School and Podlasie Academy win awards at regional and national contests. The Podlasie Art School has a long tradition in teaching local artists.

"Before this trip, I was not aware that a heart can actually sing. It can.
During the past few weeks, mine has sung repeatedly."
